TRUE HAMSTERS (CRICETINAE) OF THE PALAEARCTIC REGION: Book Presentation
15. May 2025
Tuesday, 22 May 2025, 5 PM, Glazer Hall
The book True Hamsters (Cricetinae) of the Palaearctic Region is designed as a reference work on the taxonomy, nomenclature, and geographic distribution of hamsters (subfamily Cricetinae) across the Palaearctic region. Combining insights from genomics with traditional taxonomy, the volume provides an authoritative and up-to-date taxonomic guide for a group of animals relevant to medical zoologists, epidemiologists, biostratigraphers, zooarchaeologists, evolutionary biologists, population ecologists, biosystematists, conservation biologists, museum curators, and many others working in the biological sciences. The book includes 120 illustrations and over 700 references. It features precise distribution maps for each of the 19 species, along with morphological details of skulls and molars. (From the publisher’s description)
The authors of the book, published in January this year by the University of Maribor Press, are Dr. Boris Kryštufek (Slovenian Museum of Natural History) and Georgy Isidorovich Shenbrot (Ben-Gurion University of the Negev). The book is available in print and digital format: https://press.um.si/index.php/ump/catalog/book/932.
At the event, Dr. Kryštufek will first present his research work (in the field, laboratory, with museum collections, and literature) that led to the taxonomic revision and the creation of this scientific monograph. This will be followed by a presentation on the hamsters of the Old World and their significance for local and global biodiversity.
The event will be held in Slovene. We warmly welcome your attendance!
