BOOKPLATES, BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS AND HOLIDAY POSTCARDS BY SAŠA ŠANTEL: A memorial graphic exhibition marking the 80th anniversary of Saša Šantel’s death
11. April 2025
Thursday, 17 April 2025, 5:00 PM, Art Exhibition Hall
A bookplate is a small decorative print or label affixed to the front of a book, bearing the owner’s name and is often accompanied by an illustration. Since owners typically need several bookplates, they are not unique but reproduced using various graphic techniques. Bookplates are as old as books themselves and are often considered miniature artworks created by renowned illustrators.
Painter, printmaker, and composer Saša Šantel (1883–1945) explored different graphic techniques in the early 20th century. This exhibition, curated from materials in his legacy, presents his complete body of bookplates in various forms. It showcases printed examples, preparatory sketches, and printing blocks, along with books from Šantel’s own and other private libraries bearing his bookplates.
The bookplates are complemented by a selection of Šantel’s richly illustrated postcards—holiday greetings inspired by the festive spirit of Easter and Christmas.
The author of the exhibition will give a lecture on the life and work of this multi-talented artist at the opening event, which will take place in Glazer Hall.
The exhibition will be on view until 19 May 2025.
We look forward to your visit!
