For the 90th Remembrances event, two guests will be joining us: Sonja Lokar, a professor of French and sociology, a journalist and a researcher, a politician, and an activist in the international women's movement; and Dr. Lev Kreft, a doctor of philosophy, Slovenian politician, university professor, and researcher in the fields of aesthetics, political philosophy, ethics, and the sociology of culture.
Every second death in armed conflicts in 2023 was a woman. Women's rights are the first casualty of war. Military historiography rarely even mentions women, and together with children, they fall into what S. Bauman called "collateral damage in a society driven by profit maximization." Women are absent from war declarations and peace negotiations—men make all the decisions. Wars have never liberated women, and the level of gender equality achieved in the eight decades since World War II is the result of the efforts of successive generations of women. However, many of their achievements are now in danger and some have already been lost.
Wars are a current reality and society's indifference to their victims aligns with the deteriorating status of women.
The 90th Remembrances event also marks twenty years since the first gathering on March 5, 2005, which was dedicated to the centenary of the birth of Academician Bratko Kreft, and at which Dr. Lev Kreft participated in the discussion.
We look forward to your visit.

Amanda Svensson, the author of the novel titled A System So Magnificent It Is Blinding, will be interviewed in English by Kristian Koželj, the book’s editor. Svenson’s novel was in 2023 nominated for the prestigeous Booker Prize.
In a masterfully woven tale about an unusual Swedish family that pieced together before our eyes like a puzzle, the author blinds us. Just as our vision begins to adjust, she blinds us again—and again. And when, at the very end, she pulls out her final trump card, leaving us convinced that we have finally connected all the dots, she leaves us speechless. All the while, she reveals new worlds and delights us in ways beyond words. The novel was translated by Iva Klemenčič.
We look forward to your visit!

06.03.25
Wednesday, 12 March 2025, 5 PM, Glazer Hall
At the upcoming event in the Sessions with Books series, two new monographs by linguist Prof. Dr. Marko Jesenšek will be presented: Chapters on Variants of the Slovene Language and The Eminence of the Slovene Language from the Zora collection.
In Chapters on Variants of the Slovenian Language (Carniolan, Eastern Styrian, and Prekmurje dialects), Jesenšek examines the development of Slovene language and the unification of the literary norm in the mid-19th century. In The Eminence of the Slovene Language, he highlights the pitfalls of linguistic globalization and explores all acceptable options for using a foreign language of instruction at Slovenian universities.
The discussion with Dr. Marko Jesenšek will be moderated by Dr. Natalija Ulčnik. The musical program will feature performances by Barbara Jesenšek (violin) and Srečko Kovačič (clarinet).
