We wish you pleasant holidays!
06.12.24
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; 9–20 December 2024, at 12 PM, 5 PM, and 6 PM in Glazer Hall
We kindly invite you to come watch movies with us! The local history narratives offer insight into the events, people, and the environment throughout time. The common theme of this Locofilm cycle is the retrospective of films by Zoran Bilodjerič (1951–2014), a journalist, editor, screenwriter, director, and cameraman from Maribor, who passed a decade ago.
Besides the seven films by Bilodjerič, the programme encompasses three documentary portraits of people, whom we are remembering this year: the cultural historian, playwright, translator, librarian, and director of University of Maribor Library Bruno Hartman (1924–2011); the internationally known soprano and professor Ondina Otta Klasinc (1924–2016); and the poet, bibliophile and general Rudolf Maister Vojanov (1875–1934).

Photography isn’t a mere mechanical act – it is an action in which two dimensions meet: that, which is the object, and that, which is exhibited. The light that touches the object isn’t an ordinary light; it is the interpretation, the meaning. Modern photography uses various types of lighting, but the light in its essence always uncovers something hidden or unseen. The light brightens the world, yet it stays invisible to itself, as one cannot see it – one can only see what it “brings to light”. (Aleš Žiberna)
Exhibition by the members of Photography Club TOTIFOTO: Ajda Kos, Aleš Žiberna, Anita Bračič Nemec, Breda Jurečko, Dušan Brezovnik, Ivo Rode, Iztok Kobal, Jana Ajlec, Krisztian Czorba, Maja Šivec, Matjaž Vezonik, Miran Mežnar, Mojca Cvirn, Slavko Neral in Stefan Friedrich.
The opening: Thursday, 5 December 2024, at 5 PM

Maribor and Southern Styria after Maister’s Efforts Within Slovenia Borders
General Rudolf Maister became one of the co-creators of Slovenian history at the end of the First World War, when he – out of his own initiative – proclaimed Maribor as Yugoslavian property on the 1st of November 1918 in the middle of a chaotic political situation. Additionally, he took military command of Maribor and with it the whole Southern Styria. He was promoted to general by the National council the same day. He managed to replenish the small unit of Slovenian soldiers who had supported him from the very beginning and formed the foundation of the Slovenian army. In only a few weeks, Maister gathered an army of approximately 4000 soldiers and 200 officers. On the 23rd of November 1918, he disarmed the German security guard and strengthened his military position in the city as well as claiming South Styria as a part of The State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs and consequently a part of Slovenia as we know it today. In memory of these brave efforts, Slovenians celebrate the 23rd of November as the Day of Rudolf Maister, which is also a national holiday.
