REMEMBERING: BARBARA OF CELJE BETWEEN HISTORY AND MODERNITY

This instalment of the Remembering event series will showcase a talk titled Barbara of Celje between History and Modernity, drawing from the insights of the book On the Waves of Happiness and Doom by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zlatka Rakovec-Felser. The discussion will delve into the life of Queen Barbara of Celje. The author will be interviewed by Mag. Majda Potrata.

In 2013, the author, an assistant professor in health psychology, published a historical novel about Barbara of Celje (c. 1381-1451), who was Queen of Hungary, Germany, and Bohemia. Barbara was born into a noble family that ascended from Habsburg vassals to state rulers by 1536.

The theme of the Counts of Celje is a common subject in Slovenian storytelling and drama, where Veronika of Desenice is often depicted as a heroine, while Barbara of Celje is referred to as the Black Queen. However, Barbara's image has been clouded by prejudices and myths, largely propagated by her adversaries. Through meticulous study of historical sources, Zlatka Rakovec-Felser has stripped away this excess clutter, allowing modern readers to form their own unbiased perceptions of Barbara, who was indeed ahead of her time.

The Remembering event series is organized by the Union of Cultural Societies of Maribor, the University of Maribor Library, and the Public Fund for Cultural Activities of Maribor.

The event will be conducted in Slovene.

As part of the Evenings under the Arcades event series, editor Aljaž Krivec will engage in conversation with Janja Rakuš, the author of the award-winning novel published by the Litera Publishing House.

In this latest work, Rakuš, a writer and visual artist, weaves a narrative around Livia, the translator of Yves Klein's The Blue Revolution, and Tobias, a painter with a neurological condition granting him a heightened perception of colours. This setup signals the experimental and conceptual signature familiar from Rakuš's previous works.

Three Colours for One Death is a work that can be read repeatedly, thanks to its essayistic qualities, which constantly move between art historical, philosophical, and theosophical contemplations, but also due to its literary-aesthetic perfection. The work, which expands into a multimedia project by introducing the author's videos accessible via QR code, is the winning novel of the New Horizon competition launched by Litera for the best-unpublished novels (as stated on the book jacket).

The book presentation will be carried out in Slovene.

About the Winter Event

The LIBER Winter Event is a one-and-a-half-day event that takes place every year, in person, at a LIBER Library host venue.

Exhibition Hall

The exhibition "Waves" is dedicated to Erika Vouk, this year's recipient of the Prešeren Award. It presents her poetry and reflections upon it, the author's thoughts on poetry and creation, as well as recordings of interviews and exhibits related to the poet's life and work. The exhibition curator is Nino Flisar.

Opening: Thursday, February 8th, at 5:00 PM. The event continues at 6:00 PM in the Fran Žižek Hall at the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor with a literary-musical recital.

The guest speaker will be the poet and librarian Borut Gombač, and the event will be enriched by musical poetry by Erika Vouk performed by singer-songwriter Peter Andrej.

On display from February 8th to April 20th, 2024.
