Podobno kot mnode druge dejavnosti se je v 19. stoletju pričelo društveno organizirati tudi planinstvo. Prvo tovrstno društvo so ustanovili Angleži leta 1857, drugo najstarejše evropsko planinsko društvo pa je bilo leta 1962 na Dunjau ustanovljeno Avstrijsko alpsko društvo (Oesterreichischer Alpenverein), predhosnik Nemškega in avstrijskega društva (Deutscher und Oesterreichischer Alpenverein), ki je prek sekcij delovalo tudi na Spodnjem Štajerskem. Njegovi interesi so de tukaj prepletali z interesi podružnic Slovenskega planinskega društva , zaradi česar je jmed njimi prihajalo do stalne tekme za prevlado v spodnještajerskih gorah in hribovjih.

In the 19th century in mountaineering, just like in many other activities, people started with establishing first societies. the first such society was established by the Englishmen in 1857 and the second oldest European mountaineering society was established in Vienna in 1862. The socety was named The Austrian Alpine Society (Oesterreichischer Alpenverein) and was predecessor of the German and Austrian Alpine Society (Deutscher und Oesterreichischer Alpenverein), which was through sections als active in Lower Styria. Its interests were interwoven with the interests of the Slovene Mountaineering Society (Slovensko planinsko društvo) subsidiaries and therefore a constant ravalry for the supremacy over the Lower Styria mountains and hills was present.
